How To: Shelf with wood insert for saying

Shelf with vinyl lettering insert
NO SCREWS OR NAILS NEEDED!!!
I made these a few months ago for a Girls Night out Craft. They were a huge hit. (Still not on my wall, but I need to finish  painting the walls first). This shelf has a nice 4 inch top (acutally 3.5 inch in real measurements) and an insert that slides in and out, and both sides can be painted and apply vinyl to, so you can change it up once in awhile.
Here is what you will need: (I found all my pieces at Home Depot
1 x 4 inch MDF Primed board (in the trim section of the home depot or lowes) Cut to 24"inches
1 x 6 inch MDF Primed Board (also found in the trim section) Cut to 22"
1/2 inch mdf (I had to buy mine in a 2 foot by 4 foot section) cut to 18" x 4 1/4 " strip.(this will be the wood insert that the vinyl saying will be applied to. )
Trim piece: Top decorative trim piece is about 1 inch. Cut it to 22"
The middle trim piece is about 1/2 inch wide and is about 1/2 inch thick (this is sold in the trim section as well.
The bottom ledge piece is really thin. I think it is about 1/4.
Vinyl Lettering can bought from my etsy shop here

Wood glue, can of flat spray paint ( then I use a satin spray paint when the flat is dried, the flat seems to take better to this mdf  board, so I use it like a primer)

Now assemble: You may use clamps (I often do, but at times I don't) (I did not use clamps in  my how to so you can see it can be done. Just held it in place for a few minutes till the glue pieces stayed in place)
Glue the 1/2" wide by 1/2" thick piece of wood(this is the spacer thing)
Add that piece to top of the 22" by 6 inch (really it is 22" by 5.5 inches)

Add glue to your spacer, then add your decorative trim piece

Should look like this

add your little trim piece...

wait for glued pieces to dry...

Collect your facebook bingo coins and free spin... hahaha or you know, do laundry or something...
Now add glue ....

Flip upside down onto the 4" by 24 " piece of mdf board.

Make sure to glue it to the raw side up! That way when you go to spray paint it, the primed sides are what you want exposed.

paint your insert board (the 1/2" mdf board that was cut to the 18" x 4 1/4 "

I spray painted this in my garage and not on my kitchen counter! LOL won't make that mistake twice!
Now add your vinyl to your insert and done!
I actually Made this one a few days for my nephew.
So what do you think??? Easy right?

My office Space- Before and After pictures

This is my office space. It is on the second level- near the kitchen, so I can be working in here, and work on dinner as well.
Although it was this nice color when I moved in the house, I am a gal who loves color so It you will see the new color...
I love the black wood flooring. It will tie in so nicely with my new color
see my kitchen from my office

The paint color is from Ace Hardware Clark & Kingston - Color: Forgotten Secret. I love it! I also painted the bottom paneling white.( I wish I would have taken more pictures of the room)

I added a pretty decal

finished!
okay so there you have it! I will be posting pictures of it in its "NOW" state. Since loosing my downstairs craft room to my wonderfully family and totally worth giving up for them, you will see how chaotic my office/ craft room is.

Craft room Before and after shots

This was my craft room (not my craft room right now anymore since family moved in downstairs) But here is what it looked like. Before and after (okay I love blue, it a color that makes me feel happy and relaxed)

Pretty blue (Glidden True-Tuqouise) Adding cubby shelves from lowes. I paid 44.00 per set

Two sets of cubby shelves, 44.00 per set. 2 Doors from lowes @ 18.00 each. Stools were from some home furnishings place. they were asking 35 each, but because one had a rip in it, I got them for 25.00 each. I bought four of them. 2 for my friend, 2 for me. :)
I found the dressers at my local thrift shop. I bought both pieces for 90.00. I painted them black.
So there we have it. A nice craft space. I spent about 250.00 on this room. Only because I needed a large craft table so I can sew and paint, and scrapbook, yes often at the same time ( I get distracted easily)
So I just had to tackle my laundry room today. Anything but laundry was occupying the shelf space. My hubbys spot light, smelly camp gear, my daughters toys that just get shoved in there. It was a catch all for things that did not yet have a proper home. It was a disaster area. I wish I would have taken pictures for a before and after shot. Well off to pinterest to find some cute ideas. Here was my inspiration:
Laundry Baskets

My version:

I made my tags (instructions posted soon or buy them done here) and its looking pretty.

Simple, hope to get decorations up soon.

I so would love to change the color of my laundry room. I bought my washer and dryer over a year ago and even paid extra for the pretty red finish. So no my options are limited to the color in my laundry room. I was trying to stay away from blue, since my office is dark blue green, and my craft room is a soft tiffany blue. Oh well,. I still think is a nice color palette. Tan, black red, white.

We are all addicted to Pinterest

Okay So like many others, I am utterly addicted to Pinterest. I am a huge crafter, hobbyist, amateur wood worker, collector, hoarder, squirrel finder. And in squirrel, I mean, I am easily distracted. I want to try anything and everything. I am such a scatter brain when it comes to crafting. My mind is always turning, and its very difficult to wind down.
As  my girls were growing up, every time they asked for something, wands, tutus, hair bows, anything crafty, my response was "No I am not buying that, I can just make it for you". So the joke around the house is, "Let me guess, You can make that?".

Well, We just bought a new House in Southern Utah. My dream house. So many bedrooms, so little money to decorate them all! So that's where my love of pinning comes from. Decorating my house. With the help of Pinterest, I have found so many tutorials on how to make an entire kitchen look fresh and new.
( I found this blog and she shows her decorating tips. Reading her blog had me laughing with tears in my eyes!)
Here is her blog, http://www.olderandwisor.com/search/label/decorating%20stuff
--------------------
My kitchen. This photo shows the sage green that was there when we moved in(the bottom color). It wasn't ugly, I just wanted something brighter and fresh. I really wanted to try the batten board treatment that is so popular right now.
So we tinted the primer a light yellow (I will never do that again, because now I have half a gallon of yellow primer that I can't really use anywhere else ). Then my daughter (in the picture) helped paint the walls a bright yellow. I did NOT like that color, but maybe after a month I will like it? Nope. It sat on my walls for over a month, before I decided I really did NOT like and it really had to go.

So with Thanksgiving just 4 days away (at the time) We needed to pick up the pace fast! Hubby was home from work for 2 weeks so what better time to kick it into gear?
So I went back to Home Depot got the Behr interior prime and paint and got the Golden Leaf (top color)and Almond Bark Bottom Color). Yep, thats  more like it...
My new colors

Starting the Batten Board wall Treatment ( I used the mdf primed 1 x 4. We used about 32 6 foot boards)

Loving it! has a 4 inch ledge.

looking so pretty

Almost done!
Done for now! The barn red wall was there when we moved in. I loved the color. I was going to do the same treatment as the batten board on that wall as well, but after the mad rush to get it decent for Thanksgiving (at the time) we opted to leave the red wall totally untouched, and I must say, I love it, and have no intentions on changing it! Just going to add art or decor to it one day.
