How To: Shelf with wood insert for saying

Shelf with vinyl lettering insert
NO SCREWS OR NAILS NEEDED!!!
I made these a few months ago for a Girls Night out Craft. They were a huge hit. (Still not on my wall, but I need to finish  painting the walls first). This shelf has a nice 4 inch top (acutally 3.5 inch in real measurements) and an insert that slides in and out, and both sides can be painted and apply vinyl to, so you can change it up once in awhile.
Here is what you will need: (I found all my pieces at Home Depot
1 x 4 inch MDF Primed board (in the trim section of the home depot or lowes) Cut to 24"inches
1 x 6 inch MDF Primed Board (also found in the trim section) Cut to 22"
1/2 inch mdf (I had to buy mine in a 2 foot by 4 foot section) cut to 18" x 4 1/4 " strip.(this will be the wood insert that the vinyl saying will be applied to. )
Trim piece: Top decorative trim piece is about 1 inch. Cut it to 22"
The middle trim piece is about 1/2 inch wide and is about 1/2 inch thick (this is sold in the trim section as well.
The bottom ledge piece is really thin. I think it is about 1/4.
Vinyl Lettering can bought from my etsy shop here

Wood glue, can of flat spray paint ( then I use a satin spray paint when the flat is dried, the flat seems to take better to this mdf  board, so I use it like a primer)

Now assemble: You may use clamps (I often do, but at times I don't) (I did not use clamps in  my how to so you can see it can be done. Just held it in place for a few minutes till the glue pieces stayed in place)
Glue the 1/2" wide by 1/2" thick piece of wood(this is the spacer thing)
Add that piece to top of the 22" by 6 inch (really it is 22" by 5.5 inches)

Add glue to your spacer, then add your decorative trim piece

Should look like this

add your little trim piece...

wait for glued pieces to dry...

Collect your facebook bingo coins and free spin... hahaha or you know, do laundry or something...
Now add glue ....

Flip upside down onto the 4" by 24 " piece of mdf board.

Make sure to glue it to the raw side up! That way when you go to spray paint it, the primed sides are what you want exposed.

paint your insert board (the 1/2" mdf board that was cut to the 18" x 4 1/4 "

I spray painted this in my garage and not on my kitchen counter! LOL won't make that mistake twice!
Now add your vinyl to your insert and done!
I actually Made this one a few days for my nephew.
So what do you think??? Easy right?
